Kara and Debbie Burk

Rochester Schools is proud to celebrate two of our exceptional educators, Debbie Burke and her daughter, Kara Burke, who have received special recognition from the Illinois State Board of Education's (ISBE) Those Who ExcelRocket Refresher program flier for their outstanding contributions to student learning and development.

"At Rochester 2-3, we believe that true education goes beyond the classroom—it’s about building character, confidence, and connections.  Debbie and Kara Burke embody this spirit, making a lasting impact on our students through their dedication and heart," said 2-3 Principal Randy Krepel.

As teachers in our elementary schools, Debbie and Kara have made a positive and lasting impact through the Rocket Refresher Program, an initiative designed to help students enhance their social skills while delivering snacks and drinks to teachers. The program not only provides students with opportunities to practice communication, teamwork, and responsibility but also fosters meaningful connections between students and staff.

"It's the best to see the big smiles from the kids as they hand the teachers their morning treat. The Rocket Refresher has given the students an opportunity to be leaders in the school and they truly take pride in what they do."

For Debbie Burke, this recognition is particularly meaningful as she prepares to retire at the end of the school year after a distinguished career in education. Her passion and dedication have left a lasting mark on the Rochester school community, and her leadership in launching this program alongside her daughter is a testament to her lifelong commitment to student success.Rochester Elementary student participating in the Rocket Refresher program pushing a treat cart

“I have really enjoyed having an idea of service learning become a reality and put into action," said Mrs. Debbie Burke. "It has been valuable to provide my students with the opportunity to feel empowered by learning as they interact with others. I am proud to end my career helping students realize their value and potential as they gain both academic and social skills."

The ISBE recognition highlights the positive, innovative programs happening within Rochester CUSD #3A and the dedicated educators who make them possible. We are grateful for the hard work and vision of Debbie and Kara Burke, and we celebrate this well-deserved honor.

"Miss Burke and Mrs. Burke have developed a wonderful program in which students from Rochester Elementary 2-3 provide refreshments for the school staff while working on valuable communication and math skills. The students are proud to be a part of the Rocket Refresher and our school community," said Director, Dr. Jennifer Shaw.

Congratulations to Debbie and Kara Burke on this incredible achievement!
