Preserving school history

Graduation is the pinnacle of every student’s journey in Rochester Schools—a milestone etched into memories, no matter where life leads afterward.

But after students move on, their moments of achievement often fade into history. Recognizing the importance of preserving these memories, one dedicated Rochester student is ensuring that every graduate’s legacy remains accessible for generations to come.

Joel Brock, a Senior at Rochester High School and a proud member of Scouting America, is on a mission to achieve the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle Scout project, Joel worked to digitally preserve the senior class composite photos by photographing and archiving them online. This initiative brought decades of Rochester history into the digital age, ensuring that no graduate is forgotten.Class of 1987

Joel’s project, approved by the local scouting board, represents the culmination of his hard work and dedication—qualities that align with the values of both Rochester Schools and Scouting America. By achieving the rank of Eagle Scout, Joel will join an elite group of individuals who exemplify leadership, service, and a commitment to making a lasting impact.

Joel’s undertaking is no small feat. The project involves carefully photographing and cataloging each senior composite from years past, a process requiring precision, patience, and a deep appreciation for detail. For older composites, Joel is also working to restore and digitize images that have aged or deteriorated over time. Once complete, the collection will be accessible online, allowing alumni, staff, and community members to easily browse through Rochester’s rich history.

“This project is about more than just earning my Eagle Scout rank,” Joel shared. “It’s about honoring the people who have come through these halls and making sure their memories aren’t lost. Each graduate is part of Rochester’s story, and I’m proud to play a role in preserving that legacy.”
